Asked by pilgrims

Tirupati Darshan Trip: Your Questions Answered

How much is a Tirupati trip from Chennai by tempo traveller?

A same-day trip in a 12-seater AC tempo traveller costs ₹9,100 for the vehicle, about ₹760 each for 12 people, with driver bata included. Tolls, parking and any Andhra Pradesh entry tax are paid at actuals.

Fares for every vehicle

How far is Tirupati from Chennai and how long does it take?

Tirupati is about 150 km from Chennai, 3½ to 4 hours by road. Tirumala, where the Venkateswara temple is, is 22 km further up the ghat road, about 40 minutes.

Can we do Tirupati darshan from Chennai in one day?

Yes, with a ₹300 Special Entry Darshan slot. Leave Chennai 4 to 5 hours before the slot and you are home the same night. For free Sarva Darshan, plan 2 days, because tokens are given out in Tirupati the day before.

How do I book the ₹300 Special Entry Darshan?

Online on TTD's official site, ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in, with each pilgrim's photo ID. The quota for a month opens about three months ahead, usually around the 23rd to 25th, and sells out quickly.

Darshan booking, step by step

Where do we get free Sarva Darshan (SSD) tokens?

At the Srinivasam, Vishnu Nivasam and Bhudevi Complex counters in Tirupati, usually from 4 PM the day before darshan. Each pilgrim needs Aadhaar; children under 12 don't need a token.

What is the dress code for Tirumala darshan?

Traditional dress for ticketed darshan: dhoti or kurta-pyjama with an upper cloth for men, and saree, half-saree or churidar with dupatta for women.

Are mobile phones allowed in Tirumala temple?

No. Phones, cameras and bags are left at the free deposit counters near the queue entry and collected after darshan.

Can you add Sri Kalahasti, Kanipakam or Padmavathi temple?

Yes. Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple at Tiruchanur fits into the same-day trip. Sri Kalahasti and Kanipakam fit best into a 2-day plan, from ₹16,200 in a 12-seater tempo traveller. Sri Kalahasti is the Pancha Bhoota temple for air; the one for fire, at Tiruvannamalai, makes a good day trip of its own.

See the 2-day plan

When is Tirumala most crowded?

Weekends, school holidays, Vaikunta Ekadasi (December–January) and Brahmotsavam (September–October). Book tickets early and allow extra time on those days.

Is the Tirumala ghat road open at night?

The ghat roads close from midnight to 3 AM, so a late darshan may mean waiting to come down. We plan the return so the group isn't stuck at the top.
